Identification

Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus)

Large (up to 40 cm), brownish-grey fur.

Roof Rat (Rattus rattus)

Smaller, slender, black or dark brown fur.

House Mouse (Mus musculus)

Small (6-10 cm), light brown to grey fur.

Habits & Risks

Rodents gnaw on materials, contaminate food, and spread diseases. Specific habits: - Norway Rat: Excellent swimmer, poor climber; prefers ground-level burrows and drains. - Roof Rat: Excellent climber; often found in ceilings and attics. - House Mouse: Lives inside walls and furniture; rapid breeders.

Signs of Infestation

Droppings (dark, pellet-shaped), gnaw marks on wood, plastic, or wiring, nests made of shredded paper or fabric, tracks or runways along walls, grease marks, urine odor, sounds of scurrying or gnawing in walls/ceilings.
